About Knowing.Earth

We are a scientific consultancy based in the north of England dedicated to investigating and understanding the Earth System to better search for and manage the Earth’s precious natural resources.
We do this by building global geospatial data- and knowledge-bases of key geological and environmental information. Then, we use these as the starting point for more focussed, detailed analysis and exploration. Past and current studies include detailed geological analyses of the Brazilian, Suriname, East African, and Northwest African margins. Our largest project at the moment is a new tectonic map of the World supported by Project Innerspace. In addition, we have provided courses and workshops on a variety of subjects, from the carbon cycle and Earth system modelling, to tectonic evolution, the development of past landscapes, and paleoclimatology and how these impact depositional systems. Our clients include commercial exploration companies, Governments, and other decision-makers. |

Today, so much information is available that no individual can hope to know everything.
But, technological advances in data storage and easier accessibility through the internet means that this vast wealth of information is increasingly only a click away – the expressed vision of Google – but we are not quite there yet. It is easy to access what is digital, but not everything is digital. And which information should we use and believe? Here at Knowing Earth, we are building a core team that knows where and how to look for information, the questions to ask, and the experts to call when needed. This team is supported by expert partners in Academia and Industry around the World. Together, we are building information resources and insights based on the most current understanding of our planet’s past, present, and possible futures. In this way, we can support more informed decision-making, from searching for natural resources to environmental management to education and shaping government and world policy. How do we work?
We bring together the right experts and validated data, innovating new processes to help solve Earth-system resource problems. From oil and gas exploration to environmental change policy and management.
Our approach is never set in stone [sic]. We adapt and tune our network team, resources, capabilities and processes to meet the specific needs of our client partners. We firmly believe in assembling the right team and right approach for each project. It’s about collaboration, innovation and education. And of not being afraid to ask for help or to initially ask the 'wrong' questions. It's about new and innovative ideas, but also the recognition that those scientists and natural philosophers who have proceeded us have already had many of the same ideas before us and still have much to contribute.
