The Importance of Teaching in the Field
Fieldwork is an essential skill for anyone working in the Natural sciences. In truth, it is important for everyone to get out and not only see but to observe and experience the Earth system.
The Case Approach to Field Teaching
We provide field-based courses to address different questions and challenges, from structural geology and seismic interpretation, to sedimentology, source-to-sink, landscape dynamics, and depositional systems.
These courses are based around a portfolio of cases, which can be drawn from to build classes of different lengths and focus. Cases are integrated with attendees' presentations, analytical exercises, and lectures, all designed to bring out each course's key learnings. Currently, our field courses are provided online, given covid pandemic restrictions. This year we again applied this method to support the virtual field trip to the central Pyrenees for the University of Leeds MSc Structural Geology with Geophysics. This was something we provided for free last year to help address the unprecedented situation we all found ourselves in. Last year's virtual 10-day course gave us considerable insight into online teaching, its caveats, pitfalls, and advantages. Hopefully, we will be physically back in Spain in 2022. We can run virtual field courses for companies, adapting them to address specific problems in exploration, from structural geology and seismic interpretation to sedimentology, source-to-sink, and depositional systems. Example case materials used for our source-to-sink workshop. This is based around field examples from the central Pyrenees. We can also bring in cases and other materials from around the world to best fit your needs. The underlying map is the Early Eocene paleogeography which we develop through the workshop.

Central Pyrenees: Structural Analysis
The central Pyrenees provides an incredible real-world laboratory for investigating and learning about the interaction of structure, tectonics, and depositional systems.
This course is run jointly with Professor Douglas Paton's who has over 10 years experience of teaching structural methods in the central Pyrenees. |

Central Pyrenees: Source-to-Sink
Active tectonic settings provide an ideal area to examine the interaction of uplift, transport, and deposition. In the Pyrenees, we have a great place to look at this in a manageable geographic area. This course looks at present-day processes as well as what the geological record tells us.
