Knowing Earth offers a range of resources, reports, learning tools, workshops, and consultancy to address Earth system challenges.
These include exploring for natural resources, such as hydrocarbons, ores, key minerals (including battery minerals), and water. But it also encompasses the new challenges of carbon sequestration, climate change, environmental management, and biodiversity.
These issues are all interconnected to different extents, and so a holistic, big-picture view of the whole system is what is needed.
This is where we come in.
To solve the world's current and future Earth issues, we believe that we must bring together the right people, processes, and data to build a knowing Earth through collaboration, education, and innovation

Energy
Energy is fundamental to our society and survival. The challenges are where we get our energy from, how much energy we use, and how efficiently we use it.
We provide a range of products and services to the hydrocarbon industry and now are extending this expertise to the broader needs of the current energy transition. |
Environment
When we see the word ‘environment,’ it can encompass a wide range of subjects. But as we stress throughout this website, the Earth is an integrated, complex system.
So when we look to address ‘environmental’ challenges, we need to consider the system as a whole. To make this digestible, we have packaged our services and products within six broad areas, recognizing that there will always be overlap and a need to look at the bigger picture. |
Education
We believe in the central importance of education for understanding the Earth.
This is true whether you plan to be engaged in the search for natural resources, are trying to understand how to manage the environment, or predict future climate and environmental change. Or if you are just interested in knowing how the Earth works. We provide a range of commercial and free educational resources and services for schools, colleges, universities, and individuals and organizations wanting to learn more about the Earth. |
Minerals
With the demand for key minerals accelerating, especially those used in the technologies industries and for batteries, exploring for new resources has become more critical.
We provide a range of geological knowledge and resources to facilitate mineral exploration based on our understanding of tectonics, field geology, and geospatial analytical techniques. This includes our atlases of paleogeography and reports on source-to-sink, bedrock geology, crustal architecture, and tectonics. We also offer workshops and consultancy |
Water
Today we are faced with two major problems: too much water and too little water.
This is not a new problem, as we can see when we look through history. But today, the combination of population growth, economic growth, land-use changes, and environmental change means that the hydrological system is of increasing importance. The challenge is how to manage water. Our work on landscape dynamics and climate change place is in a unique position to understand the distribution of water, to aid in the search for more water resources, but also to provide insight and advice on what to expect from future climate change. |
Carbon Sequestration
Carbon sequestration is a mechanism by which carbon is captured and taken out of the ‘active’ Earth system. It can then be either used for other processes (heating, agriculture, etc., where it may subsequently re-enter the system), or stored within existing reservoir rocks.
For storage, the challenges are almost hydrocarbon exploration in reverse. We still need to understand the nature of potential reservoir rocks (porosity and permeability), seal rock integrity, the structuralization of the area, and the long-term stability of the storage system. What we do not need to know is the source rock story. We are developing a new series of reports for companies investigating carbon storage that builds on our OSIRIS suite of databases and atlases. We can also provide consultancy and workshops. |
Geospatial Analysis
Geospatial analysis brings together advanced statistical techniques and the power and visual simplicity of maps.
These techniques can be applied to a range of geospatial Earth system problems, from biodiversity and climate change, to water management, geohazard identification and quantification, and hydrocarbon and mineral exploration. We provide a range of services, including data management, digital mapping, and geospatial analysis. This is based on over 30 years of experience in designing, building, populating, and analyzing big data. We also have a wider network of people who can work with us if you need more in-depth help. Everything we do is about bringing the right people to bear on the job required and knowing who these people are and how they can help you. |
Capability Building
Capability building is for us about engaging with you and your teams, helping to get the most out of what you already have.
This can be through discussions groups, mentoring, workshops, field-based courses, and other materials. |
Atlases
The Knowing Earth atlases bring together key databases with associated knowledge to address different Earth questions. These atlases are the commercial access to our data- and knowledge-bases.
The Knowing.Earth atlases represent a major resource for explorationists, based on over 30 years of experience and the latest research and input datasets. Built in collaboration with leading international academics, these atlases are designed to be compatible with all current service providers and are available in both digital and hardcopy. |
